In a statement provided to IGN, a Nintendo representative explained further and apologized for the already scarce availability of the system:

The representative also stated the NES Classic Edition was never meant to be a long-term and ongoing product, but added additional shipments to their original plans.

The NES Classic originally launched last year on November 10th with 30 classic NES games and save states. After its launch, the NES Classic was plagued by supply problems both in stores and online – leaving many consumers frustrated with their potential purchase.

Nintendo of America has not yet confirmed whether this discontinuation is worldwide or just for the North American region. The company says they have nothing else to announce regarding the NES Classic at this time.
